Bill Harvey learns about presbyopia at the Varilux University in Paris and meets some of the people who have made the education centre such a success

I was recently invited to take part in one of the courses run by Essilor at its education centre in the heart of Paris. The Varilux University is a teaching institution which runs two- and three-day courses throughout the year for opticians, optometrists, orthoptists and ophthalmologists on subjects such as dispensing, refraction, lens design and management and business. Academics fly in from around the world to teach here and courses have been held for students and practitioners from nearly 30 countries. My course, 'Better management of your presbyopic patients with progressive lenses' was attended by around 30 students, half being optometrists from Australia, the other half optometrists, opticians and lens technicians from around the UK.
