US conferences are often useful for seeing some of the instruments that are likely to take off in the UK in years to come. This was certainly the case with retinal imaging and more recently with OCTs. Ironically, the pattern does not always follow, particularly with medical devices, as there is often a delay for FDA approval, meaning that we sometimes see products released in Europe ahead of the US, as is the case with some contact lens care systems.
