Bill Harvey summarises an important new report released by the World Health Organisation

The World health Organisation has recently published a new report, the World report on vision (figure 1). Here is a summary of the report and why it should be of interest to all involved in eye care.

What is the World Health Organisation?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is an agency of the United Nations that has a focus on international public health. Since its establishment, in 1948, it has played a leading role promoting health education and policy and was responsible for the global eradication of smallpox. A stated aim of WHO is universal health coverage (UHC). WHO defines UHC as ‘ensuring that all people have access to needed health services (including prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation) of sufficient quality to be effective while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user the financial hardship.’
