​Plans to provide enhanced services backed by 87% of OOs and DOs

Plans to provide enhanced services in the community are backed by 87% of optometrists and dispensing opticians, according to a survey conducted by the General Optical Council (GOC).

Of the 4,000 UK optometrists and dispensing opticians asked, 62% were optimistic about the future of their profession.

GOC director of Strategy Alistair Bridge, said: ‘Our research shows that the vast majority of optometrists and dispensing opticians are keen to get involved in delivering more healthcare services in new models of care, on top of their more traditional roles like carrying out sight tests and fitting glasses and contact lenses.’

The majority of registrants asked expected their role to change over the next five years, with new technology cited as the main reason.
