With the company’s early links with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, it is fitting that the school was the venue last week for the official launch of smartphone retinal imaging adapter, Peek Retina.
Dr Andrew Bastawrous, pictured, Peek co-founder and CEO, said: ‘It has been a long and very challenging road to get to this point. Although there is much to celebrate, this is only the beginning of the journey.’
Bastawrous first began to think about a smartphone-based eye testing solution while working in Kenya gathering data for an eye disease study in the sub-Sahara. Logistics and moving testing equipment around unmade roads proved to be difficult and Bastawrous looked to harness the potential of smartphones.
