Losses of £367,900 were found in the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) annual report for 2022, the first since 2009.
The total income of 2022 saw a 10% increase, but expenditures rose by 13% because of enhanced activities since the pandemic and the absence of government grants.
The association said lower student enrolments, furlough and redundancies during the previous years, and early retirement and career changes contributed to the loss.
ABDO also highlighted its activity during the period,, including representing dispensing opticians in the GOC’s review of the Opticians Act; updates in educational syllabus and the completion of the Level 6 Ophthalmic Dispensing syllabus review consultation process; the return of CPD face-to-face events; achieved carbon neutrality; and the launch of its Research and Clinical Committee as a consultative forum.
