ABDO applauds DoH's 'grandfather' change

The Department of Healh have informed ABDO that an end to grandfathering arrangements will come into effect by July.

A change in regulations by the Department of Health will mean that businesses owned by dispensing opticians and lay people will be able to contract with Primary Care Trusts to provide NHS sight tests.

The move was welcomed by ABDO which announced the 'good news' on its website: 'We understand from the Department of Health that there will be transitional arrangements put into place after April 1 with the new arrangements coming into force on July 1'.

Under current arrangements, practices owned by DOs or lay people that are not registered with the GOC as corporate bodies must work through a 'grandfather' who is listed with the PCT as the contractor.
