Regulatory authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have accredited the ABDO Diploma in Advanced Contact Lens Practice and the Diploma in the Geometric Optics of Ophthalmic Lens at level 7 on the National Qualifications Framework.
Level 7 qualifications are at a level equivalent to a master’s degree, a postgraduate certificate and a postgraduate diploma.
The decision comes after the move to accredit the ABDO Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing at Level 6 in the framework (News, July 14).
ABDO general secretary Tony Garrett said: ‘Again this is tremendous news for ABDO members. At last they have official recognition of the value of their qualifications.
‘As with the granting of level 6 for the ABDO Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing, this has been a lengthy but well worthwhile wait and once again the Association is deeply grateful to both Mark Chandler, head of examinations at ABDO and Gordon Jones who has acted as our supervisor, for so successfully overseeing this process.’
