Thirty-six ABDO contact lens opticians visited the first MECS

Thirty-six contact lens opticians from the Association of Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) visited the first Minor Eye Conditions Services (MECS) extended services training days last month.

Based in Birmingham, the training days were funded by Local Optical Committee Support Unit (Locsu). They included lectures and practical sessions such as an Anterior Chamber Assessment, a Van Herick Assessment, foreign body removal and Goldman Intraocular Pressure Movement.

All of the contact lens opticians taking part in the training are currently completing 11 online lectures from the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre and the corresponding assessments. Following the extended services training days, the opticians who took part will make up the first group of practitioners able to offer care for minor eye conditions and glaucoma. They will be able to put what they learnt into practice with the assistance of their optometrists and the ABDO regional support network groups.
