Optical body The Association of British Dispensing Opticians will retain its current name after members rejected a proposed change to 'The British Association of Opticians'.
The result of the ballot, announced at ABDO's AGM in Stratford-upon-Avon last weekend (September 29) showed 362 votes for the name change and 457 against. A resolution enabling new Articles of Association to be introduced was carried by 584 votes to 182, with more than the 75 per cent needed in favour.
ABDO had consulted widely on both issues after undertaking at last year's AGM to put them forward (News 14.10.11). Most members already having returned their ballot papers, there was little discussion of either resolution at Saturday's meeting, other than clarification that the association's name did not need to include the title 'dispensing optician'.
