With dispensing opticians directly mentioned in the government proposals, ABDO has responded to the possible changes outlined in the Department of Health's letter (see panel).
Tony Garrett, general secretary of ABDO, said: 'All the optical bodies are unified behind a campaign to explain to the Department, ministers, MPs and the public the harm that these proposals could cause.
'No one will thank the Government if they so destroy the current contract that patients end up with waiting lists, higher prices and an absence of choice. Successive ministers have promised a genuine review with proper consultation. Legislating first then seeking our agreement under pressure does not come close to fulfilling those commitments.'
