To coincide with Keratoconus Awareness Week (September 26-30) laser eye firm Accuvision is championing treatment for the condition that is estimated to affect up to one in 500.
The company said that, using a series of diagnosis and treatment techniques, it had already treated over 100 patients, giving them much improved vision and hope for the long-term future of their sight. It added that keratoconus was frequently misdiagnosed as myopia and/or astigmatism.
Catching the disease in the early stages is essential if the degeneration is to be halted or significantly slowed, but many patients often do not realise they are suffering until the problem has become more serious. When this happens, many NHS patients find themselves caught in an unsatisfactory state of limbo between hospital doctors and their optometrist, said Accuvision's Nick Dash.
