British eyewear manufacturer Adlens is to launch its Hemisphere variable focus eyewear into the US optical market at Vision Expo East in Las Vegas next week and said it expected a full European roll out in early 2013.

With the release of the Hemisphere 'instant prescription' glasses, the manufacturer said it had created a totally new category of vision correction, which could be dispensed immediately and circumvent lab expenses.

'Hemisphere is an innovative application of variable focus lens technology developed by our talented team of physicists, engineers and optometrists in Oxford,' said Michael Ferrara, CEO and executive chairman of Adlens.

The glasses use fluid injection lens technology with external barrel reservoirs filled with clear silicon that adjust the refractive power of the lens when turned. Once the prescription in each eye is set, the ECP removes the reservoirs and seals off the lens with frame-coloured caps. The refractive power cannot be readjusted once set.

Hemisphere is available in both clear and tinted versions and covers a range of spherical powers from -4.5OD to +3.5OD.

Adlens also revealed to Optician that it was working on different frame shapes.
