Optical associations have offered advice on safely buying and wearing contact lenses due to many Halloween themed lenses being unregulated and illegal.
The advice includes getting your lenses fitted by a professional and not the internet, not sharing or swapping contact lenses with someone else to avoid infections, ensuring the suppliers are regulated as it is illegal to sell zero powered contact lenses without the supervision of a registered optical professional, not to wear the lenses overnight, to clean the lenses with solution and not water, not to reuse the lenses, to put the lenses in before applying Halloween makeup and to remove the lenses if you begin to suffer from any redness, irritation or pain.
The Association of Optometrists said: ‘Poor quality contact lenses can cause serious eye health complications with wearers at risk of corneal ulcers or abrasions, eye infections and even blindness.’
