AI eye exams increase diabetes screening rates

A study carried out at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center found eye exams powered by artificial intelligence (AI) significantly increased completion rates of diabetes screening.

Researchers noted care gaps could be closed among racial and ethnic minority youth with diabetes when the technology was used as part of eye exam process.

The study, which was published in Nature Communications, explored diabetic eye exam completion rates in people under the age of 21 with type 1 and 2 diabetes.

During the exam, pictures were taken of the back of the eye without the need for dilation and AI was used to provide an immediate result. It found 100% of patients who underwent AI exams completed the eye assessment.
