AI tool frees up clinicians’ time

An artificial intelligence (AI) telephone assistant has been triaging post-cataract surgery patients at nine UK hospital trusts in order to reduce the pressure on healthcare professionals, reported the BBC.

The AI-powered tool, named Dora R1, had been successfully tested on 225 post-cataract surgery patients recruited from the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust between September 2021 and January 2022, according to a study published by eClinicalMedicine.

In the last year, Dora R1 had made more than 12,000 follow-up calls to patients in the South, said the BBC.

The study examined Dora R1’s accuracy and safety in detecting the need for further post-cataract surgery management and compared results against ophthalmic specialists assessments,
