Research published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, sought to establish risk factors for the development of AK for daily disposable contact lens users compared to daily wear reusable lens users.
Study authors said it was important because contact lens use was the principal cause of microbial keratitis, of which AK accounted for approximately 50% of cases with sight loss.
Manufacturers and regulators that increased the prominence of information about how to avoid risks would improve safe contact lens use among wearers, researchers concluded.
