Alcon pushes dry eye advice

A study showed the need for increased education around dry eye disease

A study by Alcon has revealed the need for increased education around dry eye disease and relationships with optometrists in Australia.

Only a quarter of Australians were aware that symptoms such as dry, blurry and tired eyes were signs of dry eye, and as little as 11% would consult an optometrist and 3% a pharmacist in response to suffering from these issues. Meanwhile, 21% haven’t sought help at all.

Rich Oliver, country franchise head of Vision Care at Alcon Australia and New Zealand, said: ‘There is still a lot of education and awareness driving needed to help find Australians relief, but with this study, we are aiming to raise awareness of the symptoms and causes of dry eye to help Australians feel more confident when speaking with their optometrists.’

‘Patients can get quick relief and expert advice by visiting their local pharmacies and speaking to a pharmacist. The ongoing relationship between pharmacist and optometrist is key to helping Australians manage their eye health.’

Jason Holland, clinical optometrist of The Eye Health Centre, who specialises in dry eye management, added that pharmacists play a crucial educational role and can help reduce burden on the health system.

The research was released in conjunction with the launch of Alcon’s Systane Complete Preservative-Free Lubricant Eye Drops.
