Altacor releases new punctum plugs

Altacor has released new punctum plugs, Comfortear Lacrisolve 180 Absorbable, for practices with a special interest in dry eye and ophthalmologists in hospital settings.

The plugs, made from polydioxanone polymer, offer occlusion therapy lasting up to 180 days, almost double the duration of most other absorbable plugs, said the company. They have been designed to temporarily treat the symptoms of dry eye disease, including post-surgery, contact lens intolerance secondary to dry eye and to increase efficacy of ocular medications and lubricants.

‘The plugs are effective in the horizontal canaliculi, are comfortable after proper placement and will not fall out of the punctum. Punctal dilation and topical anesthesia are not typically required for the insertion of the plugs,’ said an Altacor statement.
