Fast test to detect early-stage AMD is being developed

Manchester-based technology research and development company MuMac is raising finance to market its ‘unique’ optical technology for the rapid screening of eye diseases.

The RapiDA instrument developed by the University of Manchester spin-out company provides a fast test to detect early-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) before any obvious biological changes can be detected with imaging devices. MuMac chief executive Dennis Camilleri argued investment will allow its three founders to scale-up the RapiDA and start trading with opticians on the high street as well as hospital clinics within weeks.

He said: ‘Globally it is forecast that nearly 200 million people will have AMD by 2020. The product, which is patented, is small, user-friendly and can perform a screening and identify early-stage AMD in five to 10 minutes.’
