Macular degeneration sufferers not given option of wide-view intra ocular optical lenses

AMD sufferers were wrongly being told that there is no treatment available despite new technology that could offer the equivalent of ‘widescreen’ vision, said developers.

Healthcare professionals, including opticians, were often unaware of wide-view intra ocular optical lenses including EyeMax, which has been developed by London Eye Hospital Pharma (LEHP).

The company said one grandmother had already experienced 600 per cent improvement in her vision since having the EyeMax implanted.

A statement estimated that by 2020, there would be nearly six million cases of AMD in Britain, due to the ageing population.

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon Bobby Qureshi, who founded LEHP, said: ‘The EyeMax lens has opened up the potential for clear vision to millions of AMD sufferers who have undergone cataract surgery and been told they had no option but to eventually lose their sight.’
