Self-employed optometrist Geoff Roberson has been appointed as the AOP's professional adviser.
The Saffron Walden registered practitioner, who was temporary chief executive of the College of Optometrists in 2003, also has experience as an expert witness and professional adviser in court actions, as well as in NHS and GOC disciplinary processes.
'Much of his work will involve taking a lead in primary care matters and giving support and guidance to LOCs,' said Bob Hughes, AOP chief executive.
'He will also provide further optometric back-up to our legal defence team. Geoff has exactly the credentials we need to underpin and improve our ability to advise, support and when necessary defend our members.'
Roberson, who joins the AOP in January, stated that he was delighted to be joining the AOP 'at this challenging but exciting time for our profession'.
'I hope to bring the experience I have gained from practice, education and training, primary care and complaint handling to the benefit of all members of the Association, as well as the optical profession,' he said.
