The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is in discussion with Optometry Scotland over whether reference to the NICE guidelines on glaucoma referral would be inadmissible in a tribunal or legal case relating to an optometrist working in Scotland.
AOP chief executive Bob Hughes told Optician: 'The position is very uncertain in relation to Scotland. NICE guidelines do not apply in Scotland, but it is not certain whether reference to them would be inadmissible in a tribunal or legal case.'
The comments came in the wake of Eyecare Scotland's statement claiming that the NICE glaucoma guidelines were only advisory, did not apply in Scotland and were at odds with the accepted Scottish guidelines (News 16.7.09).
