Asda sets up pre-reg scheme and expands

New store openings before the end of 2003 will bring Asda/Wal-Mart's total number of optical 'departments' to 66 it has been revealed. In all, 36 new jobs will be created by the supermarket's expansion.

Asda launched its own pre-reg scheme last month, and Claire Slade, director of professional services, told optician it had had a successful start.
'We took on five pre-regs in our Portlethen (Aberdeen), Livingston, Leicester, Warrington and Barnsley stores,' she said this week.
'They've obviously got a supervisor, and we've allocated them a mentor as well.
'They're currently getting on fine, last week they got involved in sight testing and the whole programme seems to have kicked off to a good start.'
The optometrist revealed that Asda plans to double the number of pre-regs next year and have 10 pre-reg placements.
New in-store opticians departments planned before the year- end include supermarkets based in Queensferry, Sheffield, Stevenage and Cumbernauld.
The optical expansion Ð part of a £3.9m investment in photography, jewellery and optometry Ð will be in place before 2004 at a cost of £520,000.
David Miles, Asda's business unit director for speciality, claimed that the expansion was 'great news for shoppers'.
'Whether it's a pair of Armani frames, a digital camera or even a diamond ring, more customers than ever before will be able to take advantage of Asda's low prices on optical, jewellery, films, developing and cameras.'
