Patients with early or late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) should only be given aspirin with caution.
The latest in a series of studies looking at the link between aspirin and AMD, published in this month's Ophthalmology Journal, looked retrospectively at aspirin use among participants in the European Eye Study. It appears that, even after adjustment for all potential risks such as age, gender and so on, there is a direct relationship between frequency of aspirin use and risk of wet/late AMD, with the highest incidence of wet AMD being found in the group that used aspirin daily as opposed to weekly or monthly.
