Award winners at Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2019 announced

Katarzyna Ring wins this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year

Katarzyna Ring has won this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year (SWOTY).

The 30-year-old received the award from Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Oti Mabuse and show host Rylan Clark-Neal. Her prize was £10,000 in cash and £1,000 glasses wardrobe from Specsavers.

The Editor’s Choice award went to student optometrist Nashwa Choudhury, 20, from Bradford. She said: ‘Besides wearing glasses to help correct my vision, I also wear them to help express my sense of style. I believe everyone should wear their glasses with pride and I’m over the moon to have been chosen.’

The Dame Mary Perkins Award for eye health was awarded to optometrist Emma Ginger from Specsavers in Exeter for saving the life of a patient with a rare brain condition.

Celebrities also received awards at the ceremony, with RuPaul’s Drag Race judge and Strictly star Michelle Visage winning the celebrity Spectacle Wearer of the Year award and comedian Sue Perkins taking home the prize for her Service to Specs. Celebs Go Dating star Tom Read Wilson won the Best Newcomer award.

This year, SWOTY raised £100,000 from award entries, sponsorship, ticket sales and luxury raffle with all proceeds going to Kidscape, making the total raised by Specsavers for the charity in the last 11 years more than £700,000.
