For his successful trial of gene therapy in treating a particular form of genetically induced blindness in humans, scientist and surgeon Dr James Bainbridge has become the fourth recipient of a Fincham medal from The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
The award recognises individuals who, while still in the middle of their careers, have already given exceptional help in the fight against visual impairment. Bainbridge's work is viewed as a significant step in the treatment of diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and AMD.
