BBR Optometry supports local student’s sight loss trip

BBR Optometry has supported a student from Hereford with a £1,000 donation ahead of his trip to India and Nepal to provide training on a diagnostic device for eye disease.

Hugo Jobst, a medical student at the University of St Andrews, will travel 15,000km on his motorcycle and train over 1,000 midwives and nurses at 35 institutions on how to use the Arclight Ophthalmoscope.

The device was developed at St Andrews and is designed to be accessible to low-resource areas because of its durability and low production costs.

Daniel Read, practice manager at BBR Optometry, said: ‘The fight against preventable blindness is an ongoing challenge. The people most affected are often the furthest away from appropriate care, but by travelling to rural areas and training and equipping workers, Hugo will be giving many more children the best chance at a fair start to life. We wish Hugo all the best and can’t wait to follow his journey.’
