A new strategy to tackle illegal practice in the optical sector has been welcomed by BCLA – as it stressed the dangers of illegally sold contact lenses.
The GOC strategy (News 01.08.14) covers all types of illegal practice prohibited by the Opticians Act 1989, including online contact lens sales that do not comply with UK law.
GOC chair Gareth Hadley said: ‘Our independent research has demonstrated the risks to patient safety that illegal practice can cause. In particular, illegal sales of both powered and cosmetic contact lenses can cause a significant risk to the public.
A proactive, multi-pronged approach to reducing public harm has been promised by the GOC.
