Specsavers Opticians in Ringwood, Hampshire recently treated 10 Belarusian youngsters to an eye-opening adventure.
The seven and eight year-olds are from Mogilev in Belarus, part of the fallout zone from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. They enjoyed health checks and vision tests as well as visits to the New Forest. The excited visitors stayed in the area for a month, during which they were treated with goodie bags, gifts, sweets and trips to the beach and shops.
Many of the children have never had their vision tested before. 'All of the children were supplied with glasses free of charge,' said store director Clive Butterfield.
He added that 'the children were well behaved, polite, and also very thankful.' They were given sweets and cuddly toys on arrival, and looked as though 'they hadn't eaten sweets in a very long time.'
