An expert witness has told a test case disciplinary hearing on the supervision of a trainee dispensing optician that a DO dealing with children's cases should be on the premises and should only delegate to a trainee on a 'case by case' basis.

Glenn Andrew Tomlinson was called by Boots Opticians to give evidence to a General Optical Council fitness to practise panel last week. He said the presence of the DO would be 'serving the best interests' of a child and would be necessary even for 'adequate care'.

Giving evidence over allegations of the lack of supervision relating to a 14-year-old Isle of Man boy at his local Boots Opticians, Tomlinson said both options required a DO to be 'capable of intervention'.
