The launch of the range was preceded by months of trialling and investment last year by the optical chain. However, Hereford-based Nick Rumney told optician: 'It is to be hoped that the original anti-competitive suggestion emanated from Boots, and the desire of such a reputable company as Ciba to increase market share, has affected its judgement.' Boots Opticians contact lens product manager Ian Dunning said: 'We have been very closely involved from the outset with Ciba Vision in developing and trialling Focus Progressive lenses. As a result, we were very pleased to have the opportunity to sell these lenses on an exclusive basis for a limited period.' Ciba Vision said that the range was 'positive news' for practitioners, and its managing director Marcus Swalwell said: 'We are expecting this lens to grow the overall contact lens market.' Ciba confirmed that Boots Opticians' exclusive distribution will finish at the end of March and the range will be available to all customers from April 2000.
