Chancellor Gordon Brown announced £1.25bn for research and science in his comprehensive spending review this week.
It means that the average PhD student would earn £13,000 a year, BBC Online reported, and after three years post doctoral researchers should be earning £4,000 more than today. This is in addition to the multi-billion five-year programme the chancellor has set out for the NHS in his 2002 Budget.
