The annual general meeting discussed the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' proposed guidelines for standards in refractive surgery.
Plans include the need for refractive surgeons to be listed on the specialist register for surgeons (two thirds of the BSRS membership are not on such a register).
There were concerns expressed about the possibility that Parliament may legislate on refractive surgery provision without consulting the BSRS.
A decision was made to ballot all members about how to move forward regarding the new guidelines and the results will be forthcoming in the next two months.
A review of the conference will be published in optician in the coming weeks.
