Having now been qualified for 35-plus years, I now know why. Experience showed that when carrying out refractions, your retinoscopy was something that you came to rely on, and that you only felt really happy using your favourite instrument.

My particular favourite was the American Optical 'Ful-Vue' spot retinoscope. This was the model with the curved top forehead rest (essential for spectacle wearers to avoid lens scratches), easily removable semi-silvered mirror and a built-in dynamic retinoscopy chart. Purists did not like this instrument because of its large sight hole, but for me it was the easiest to use of those available back in 1966.
