Call for evidence closes

The review of the Opticians Act resulted in 350 contributions from stakeholders

The General Optical Council’s (GOC) call for evidence for the review of the Opticians Act resulted in 350 contributions from stakeholders before closing on July 18, 2022.

The GOC stated the information collected will inform the business case for future change to the Act and any immediate changes to associated policies. It will analyse the responses to assess the impact of actions and identify gaps where further research is needed.

In September, the GOC will provide an update with these recommendations and a proposed schedule, along with a summary of review findings and next steps. Amendments to the act will not be implemented for several years in line with the government’s healthcare reform plans.

Leonie Milliner, chief executive and registrar at the GOC, said: ‘I would like to thank all those who took the time to engage with this unique opportunity to inform the future of legislation and associated policies, and regulation of eye care provision.’
