PhD Student Kieran O'Callaghan was recently awarded first prize and €5,000 in the 10th annual Innovact Campus Awards for his VisionRE obstacle detection and navigation aid for the visually impaired.

Using time-of-flight imaging technology, the device identifies and classifies 3D objects in real-time and presents the information to the user through audio and multimodal tactile human machine interfaces.

On his achievement, O'Callaghan (pictured) said: 'The endorsement of my device by the Innovact Campus Awards is critical for the promotion of the device in the visually impaired community and is a great accolade for the organisations with which I have been developing the project.'
