Cataract plan wins praise

New health secretary John Reid praised a direct access cataract scheme involving Peterborough-based opticians this week.

He was speaking at the NHS Health and Social Care awards held in London.
Peterborough Hospital NHS Trust won the 'Fast Track Award for Improving Waiting Times' after waiting times fell from up to 52 weeks to a maximum of eight. Project manager Sarah Butler said: 'The hospital and local opticians have worked together to provide a service that has had a dramatic effect on waiting times and reduced the amount of inconvenience for patients.'
Mr Reid called the award winners 'inspirational', and told them 'you represent the best the NHS has to offer'.
Last year prime minister Tony Blair praised the Peterborough scheme at a health management awards ceremony (News, December 6).
