Retinal photography's role in the detection of Von-Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease will be raised later this autumn in a Channel 5 series that highlights little-known charities.
Celebrity Wishlist will raise the profile of work carried out by Professor Eamonn Maher at Birmingham University into the condition.
He will urge optometrists to be aware that angiomas in the teenage years are often the first sign of VHL and that late diagnosis is one of the biggest problems in helping sufferers of this sight, and life-threatening condition.
VHL is a genetic condition involving the abnormal growth of blood vessels in some parts of the body which are particularly rich in blood vessels. These tumours are commonly found in the brain, head and spinal cord.
