Charity gains from optom's pains

Optometrist Russ Dawkins, director of Specsavers Opticians practices in Egham and Staines, has raised over £500 for a local charity, the White Lodge Centre, at one of the world's greatest canoeing spectacles.

Dawkins took part in South Africa's Dusi Canoe Race, a three-day, 120km journey from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Some 2,000 teams took part in the event and, despite numerous setbacks Ð including a broken oar and losing the front of the boat on the final day Ð Dawkins' team managed to finish halfway up the field.
Dawkins also returned to the UK with an unknown tropical disease, which left him bed-bound in the London Hospital for Tropical Diseases, but he has since recovered. He said: 'It was a gruelling and exhausting challenge but I am thrilled to have raised over £500 for such a well-deserving local charity. The White Lodge Centre supports disabled children, adults and their families in Surrey.'
