A mother of three who raised money for sight charity Fight for Sight was guest of honour at its recent Open Day at the Institute of Ophthalmology.
Carol Standen from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in the summer to raise £9,341.73 for the charity.
Ms Standen became involved after her elder son Miles was diagnosed with pars planitis three years ago. He has had several operations and although he has lost some sight in one eye, his condition is now stable and the appearance of his eye unaffected.
In July she joined a group of 16 people, plus their leader and a small army of porters, on an 11-day trek to the summit of the 19,340ft high mountain. On the eighth day they made the final night ascent and Ms Standen found herself ahead, with only the African guide in front of her. She reached the top six hours later. ÔComing back down was worse. I was just wanted a helicopter to come and pick me up,Õ she said.
At the Open Day Ms Standen was presented with a framed certificate to mark Fight for SightÕs appreciation of her achievement and her donation. The sponsorship money came from friends, family, local companies and colleagues at the Chiltern Hospital in Great Missenden where she works in the MRI/CT Scanner Unit.
