Last week Optician welcomed Cheryl Donnelly to her new position as the chief executive officer of the British Contact Lens Association (31.01.14 page 8). Not only does Donnelly bring with her a wealth of clinical experience but she also has a strong background in business management across a range of countries from her time with Bausch+Lomb. Another powerful string to Donnelly?s bow is her ability to communicate and educate, the very two qualities she espoused in Optician?s exclusive interview. Indeed in the Optician office Donnelly has long been referred to as ?Our Cheryl? by Optician?s inimitable clinical editor Bill Harvey.

While welcoming the new BCLA chief, Optician would also urge her to apply her skills to some of the big issues facing optics. This list of issues grows by the day as the recent court case on substitution (see news) proves. This list is one which others have consistently failed to tackle. Perhaps substitution is not seen as problem by the authorities?
