An annual vision screening scheme in south Dublin has been reinstated by health authorities after the Sunday Times reported its withdrawal.

Around 3,500 primary pupils in 44 schools in south Dublin were checked as part of the Health Service Executive's national school screening programme in 2007, the newspaper reported.

About 100 children were referred for further investigation following the 2007 programme.

A €1bn shortfall in finances led the health body to cancel the programme.

One insider described to the Sunday Times (March 1) how staff were asked to cover up the cancellation of the scheme.

'They told us not to inform the parents that screening wasn't happening. But if there is no screening, it's vital that parents know their children need to be checked independently, before it's too late,' said the insider.
