A programme focusing on children’s vision was broadcast by NHS internet television channel Hiblio last month after it worked together with Devon LOC.
In a bid to raise awareness of children’s vision during National Eye Health Week, a message was also sent out in school newsletters and regional newspapers by the LOC.
Fiona Hiscox and Charles Bill, optometrists with a special interest in children’s eye health, were interviewed during this 20 minute broadcast.
Bill said: ‘It’s massively important that if there are any abnormalities they are picked up as early as they possibly can be to make sure that the treatment can utilise that development stage to bring things forward.’
He highlighted that children with learning disability had a much higher possibility of having sight problems, and both optometrists agreed children’s eyes should ideally be examined before starting primary school. The fitting of contact lenses in children was also explained, for use in sports, to build up confidence and myopia control.
