Last week saw the opening of the Centre for Better Managed Health and Social Care at City University, London.

The centre aims to act as a focal point for health and social care workers and to help lead any reform agenda. The opening event was attended by opinion leaders, such as Lord Adebowale, chief executive of Turning Point, and Martin Green, chief executive of the English Community Care Association.

The panel discussed the implementation of the white paper on NHS reform, concluding that the concept of 'Big Society' was vague and little understood. Green argued: 'It is clearly an ill-defined concept and this vagueness provides a great opportunity for us, as healthcare professionals, to shape the 'Big Society' in a way that fits our commitment to providing the most effective health and social care possible.'
