Two contact lens pioneers, Josef Dallos and his brother-in-law George Nissel, will be honoured with Commemorative Green Plaques in London's Marylebone for their efforts in bringing sight to thousands of people.
According to the Westminster Chronicle (January 29), a plaque to honour ophthalmologist Dallos will be put up at 18 Cavendish Square, the site of the first practice in the UK to deal only with contact lens fittings. Nissel will have a separate plaque in his memory at the junction of Melcombe Street and Siddons Lane where he set up an independent contact lens laboratory.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is sponsoring the plaque to Dallos, while contact lens company Cantor and Nissel is supporting the plaque to Nissel, with unveiling likely to be in June.
