In the run-up to Halloween, the British Contact Lens Association undertook a PR initiative to warn consumers that misuse of plano lenses can lead to serious eye problems. The initiative was launched to highlight to consumers that these contact lenses should only be sold by or under the supervision of an optometrist, dispensing optician or medical practitioner.

In recent years, the use of novelty lenses in the run-up to Halloween has greatly increased and while the risk of infection is low, the BCLA was concerned that consumers may obtain these lenses from unregulated sources and may be unaware of the potential risks of misuse.
