Clarification

Optician would like to clarify comments made by optometrist Lynne Fernandes in last week’s In Focus ‘Profession responds to calls for doctor title’.

She stressed optometry training and degrees would have to change before optometrists should be called doctors.

‘We trained to be optometrists, did a degree in optometry and therefore are optometrists not (medical) doctors. Until our training and degree changes, if you want to be a doctor, then you should train to be a doctor,’ Fernandes told Optician this week.
