The government has been warned it is playing ‘fast and loose’ with NHS patients’ eye care in England.

The government has been warned by the Association of Optometrists (AOP) that it is playing ‘fast and loose’ with NHS patients’ eye care in England.

A letter sent by the Optometric Fees Negotiating Committee (OFNC) highlighted that a last-minute cut in funding means optical practices will have no choice but to prioritise private patients in order to survive financially.

In the letter addressed to the Secretary of State and Minister for Primary Care, the OFNC demanded NHS England works with the sector to support practices.

It also noted that NHS England has not provided guidance to the sector when routine care for NHS patients can resume, while many practices have started to expanded the care offered.
