A total of 978 votes (23 per cent) were cast in the College of Optometrists' 2006 elections to council, held in October.

There were ballots for four regions London, North West, Scotland and South East, with the following elected to serve as council members for the next three years.

Jane Macnaughton, David Parkins, and Noreen Rahman were elected for London, Jayesh Patel and Tony Trowsdale for the South East, Hal Rollason for Scotland and Cindy Tromans and Kamlesh Chauhan for the North West.

Council members elected unopposed were Kamlesh Gohil for the East, Sarah Townsend for the North East, Vinesh Patel for the East Midlands, Sarah Bickerton and David MacVeigh for the South West and Sue Stentiford for Yorkshire and Humberside.

The new members will be welcomed on to the council at the College's AGM in Newcastle on March 11, 2007 and will become part of the full complement of 40 council members.

College president Kevin Lewis said: 'I am delighted that, for the first time since the new College governance structure was implemented in 2005, there will be a full complement of regionally elected members of council. I would like to congratulate all the successful candidates and I look forward to meeting them all at the AGM in Newcastle in March.'
